Career Aspirations

I have developed an avid interest in ecology and hope to continue studying plant and wildlife ecology as I move into resource management or graduate school.  I am broadly interested in reducing human impacts on ecological functions throughout our landscape.   Specifically, I currently focus on the incorporation of ecological services into existing agricultural biomes, management and interconnection of habitat fragments and nature preserves, and the continuing cultural/ecological reintroduction of large carnivores throughout the world.

Research Experience

During the '08 field season I had the opportunity to work extensively with Sarah Johnson resampling John Curtis's lowland forest sites.   I gained a wealth of experience in the sampling techniques commonly applied to comparative vegetation studies as well as basic soil and elevation survey techniques.   I was also able to learn a great deal of the flora of southern Wisconsin thanks to Sarah's patient tutelage.
In the year prior to last field season I worked on a variety of projects including seed processing, earthworm identification, and GIS orthorectification.  These experiences have helped me develop a strong understanding of the overarching processes involved in research project development and implementation.

Hobbies

I am an avid backcountry skiier, hiker, and rock climber.  I love being immersed in nature and find myself most inspired in those settings.  Beyond sports I enjoy writing, gardening, and guitar.  While I aspire to travel extensively throughout South America and Asia, the beautiful glacial landscape and flora of Wisconsin have often reminded me how much we have to be thankful for right here in Wisconsin.
