Habitat:  Forming a thick stand with Quercus ellispoidalis in sandy clay soil at edge of floodplain of river, both species probably becoming established with cesation of grazing more than 25yrs ago.
 
Text:  Tree 10m tall, 30cm in diameter. Bark dark, hard, deeply furrowed in lower 2m, the rest of the trunk and branches smooth, dark creamy white. Last summer's twigs and winter buds are shiny brown. Scale of ament brown; disc pale yellow-green. Anthers purple
