Habitat:  Dry-mesic Oak-Hackberry woods with Bitternut, an isolated stand surrounded on all sides by deep-soiled prairie. Assoc.: Trillium grandiflorum, T. recurvatum, Uvularia grandiflora, Polygonatum biflorum, Smilax ecirrata, Carex blanda, Orchis spectabilis,. Dentaria laciniata, and Ranunculus septentrionalis. The violet is and associate of Geum vernum, but the latter grows in a heavily disturbed portion of the woods removed from all species listed above except Ranunculus.
