Abundant, forming an almost solid stand in 10m. wide strip on N-facing slope between open cultivated field and woods of Quercus rubra, Acer rubrum above, apparently it has invaded a strip of cultivated land that was abandoned many years ago.. Tree 12m tall, 20cm diam., w/ 2 trunks from the base. Twigs blackish, becoming dull white when ca. 2cm diam., larger branches & trunk bright white, older parts blackened w/dirt;bark when peeling reveals new surfaces of light flesh color w/dark lenticels. |

Most trees of this sp. here which are blooming don't have leaves as developed as this one. Young lvs. shiny & viscid. Male catkins pendant, yellow-green, bracts w/brown tips. Female catkins erect; stigmas pink or pale greenish white.
