Origin and Early Evolution of Life

Origin of life: In collaboration with several colleagues in the Department of Chemistry, Geoscience, and the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, we are working on a project that explores the potential for deploying selection in a lab setting to drive the de novo appearance of life-like chemical systems. You can learn more about the project here. Some sense of the philosophy underlying this project is described in this short article in Bioscience.

I am recruiting graduate students for work in this area. We also have an opening for a postdoctoral scientist

Origin of eukaryotic cells: In collaboration with Buzz Baum (University College, London) I have developed the inside-out theory for the origin of eukaryotic cell structure. This hypothesis is describe more fully in a paper in BMC Evolutionary Biology and discussed in a review in the American Journal of Botany.
