The evolution reading group is an interdisciplinary, interdepartmental organization which meets weekly during the summer and biweekly during the semester to discuss classic works in evolutionary biology. It was formed by Lynn Nyhart (Department of History of Science) two years ago to take on the reading of Stephen J. Gould's colossal The Structure of Evolutionary Biology and has since gone on to complete Tempo and Mode in Evolution by George Gaylord Simpson, Genetics and the Origin of Species by Theodosius Dobzhansky and The Major Transitions in Evolution by John Maynard Smith and Eors Szathmary. Currently, we are reading Endless Forms Most Beautiful by Sean Carroll. Our group includes students, post-docs and faculty from departments across campus (e.g., Agronomy, Botany, Chemistry, Genetics, History of Scienc, Philosophy and Zoology). Newcomers are always welcome. |
