Welcome to the Botany Studio

This facility provides illustration and photographic services for faculty, staff and students of the UW-Department of Botany, and other UW clients on a limited basis.

Staffed by Senior Artists Kandis Elliot and Claudia Lipke, the studio focuses on the digital creation of botanical illustrations and their preparation for print, classroom, web, and other uses. Our equipment includes Macintosh workstations, film and flatbed scanners, a film recorder, Epson printers including a 24-inch wide-format archival printer, a 25-inch film laminator, and a fully equipped photography studio with digital and video cameras.

Kandis Elliot specializes in science illustration and book design and layout. Working with Macintosh computers and a digitizing tablet, she produces botanical illustrations, charts and graphs, flyers and posters, and typesetting and compositing for publications ranging from newletters and brochures to web-offset text and trade books. Claudia Lipke, a long-time professional photographer, has adapted her film skills to the digital platform. She takes photos both in the studio and in the field; her botanical subjects range from agar plates of tiny seedlings to the blooming of vast prairies. Claudia also records the department's personnel and special events, prepares 35 mm slides from digital files, and shoots videos of colloquia and lectures at the Botany Department. The Botany Studio is located on the UW-Madison Campus in B318 Birge Hall. Hours are 9-5 M-F. Clients are urged to contact studio staff in person to discuss projects and time frames. Students planning to create their own posters but print them on the Epson wide-format printer must contact either Claudia or Kandis to discuss file setup.
